Cuba | State at Play
Collective Taxi at Calle 23 , Havana, Cuba
„Cuba | State of Play“ is an evocative visual exploration, that portrays a nation and its people amidst an enduring crisis. It captures the daily struggles that permeate Cuban society, where survival is a constant battle. I sought to comprehend and empathize with the existential poverty that envelops their lives.
Through this concept, I embarked on a personal journey of discovery, immersing myself in the vibrant and enigmatic Cuban cityscape. In an attempt to comprehend and empathize with the pervasive existential poverty that serves as the backdrop of the people’s existence. I approached my subjects with a sense of alienation, as an outsider attempting to navigate the intricacies of Cuban life, I moved through the streets with a profound sense of alienation, yet every encounter left me deeply touched and connected. I aimed to convey the stark reality of their existence, painted with both resilience and hardship.
This collection is a part of my personal odyssey, as I delved into the heart of Cuba, exploring its rich tapestry of emotions. I sought to understand the multifaceted nature of Cuban life, capturing the delicate interplay between hope and despair.
They portrait my first steps towards a real encounter with the city and its people, to slowly understand the existential poverty that surrounded me so painterly and in which I moved like a stranger; – alien, alone, touched.
